Maybe you haven't hear the word Frenulum before, but you know what it is. It's that piece of skin that connects your upper lip to your gums.
Owen has been doing so well on the stairs lately. So a couple day ago when I was making dinner I wasn't too worried when I realized he was crawling up and down our stairs to the basement. I was almost done with dinner when he fell. I rushed to get him and immediately noticed his nose was bleeding a lot. I got him cleaned up and he only cried for a couple minutes. He went back to playing. A couple minutes later I picked him up, he opened his mouth and there was blood in it. I thought he must have a cut in his mouth. He still has no teeth so I knew he didn't bite anything. As I searched around his mouth I found the source of all the blood...the place where his frenulum used to be. When he slipped he must have been on his tummy and his upper lip rubbed the carpet so hard that it tore his frenulum...and he got a bloody nose. Poor guy. I have felt guilty since. One of my neighbors is a doctor and the other a dentist. They both said this happens a lot and they usually heal really well. I just have to make sure it doesn't get infected.
He has been surprisingly fine. The big difference is his smile...it's not the same.
Before

After

His cut frenulum hangs down, but I think it is just because his upper lip is swollen. It looks a lot better now, than in this picture.
Something interesting...my frenulum was torn was I was younger too. I can still remember it well. My older sister, Julie, and I were sharing a 7up (it was one of those long-neck glass bottles). I was chugging it (probably taking more than my share) and Julie got mad, so she popped the bottom of the bottle while it was in my mouth. She tore my fremulum. I'm still a little bitter about it...ok, no, not really. Owen's is torn worse than mine was though. Oh---I still feel so bad.
On a happier note...here's a cute video of Owen dancing.

I am so sorry! That makes for a sad day. I love the dancing, though. Thanks for ending your post on a happy note. Good luck with the frenulum healing! :P
Oh that poor little guy. It's amazing how fast kids heal. And how nice for you to know a doctor and a dentist.
When I saw the title of you post I thought you were going to tell your funny story of when that happened to you, but then You started talking about Owen and it made me sad :( The best thing is that kids heal quickly! You guys are coming up this weekend aren't you? I sure hope so!
Ooooh, that hurts just thinking about it!
Wow! What an impossible word for that thing in our mouths. hahaha... But, poor kid-o. I'm sure he'll look better in no time. Just a story to make you feel better...when Sammy was 10 months old (the day before Tawnya's wedding), she slipped and her 2 bottom teeth went THROUGH her tongue! EEK!! It was sooooooo sad! I feel so sad and bad and guilty and.... But, she's just fine. So...it's a right of passage for these little ones to go through these crazy experiences! You're a great mom!! Don't feel guilty. :0)
ooh. that makes me cringe. I feel so bad for the guy. I never tore mine, but I believe I had the thing clipped when I was older to close the gap in my teeth. So sad for your little guy.
Still so sad even after you told me about it on the phone! But that video of him dancing really got mom and I laughing {I'm here at the house}. I love it when they dance. Can't wait to see you tomorrow. DOn't forget the wipes cases for moi!
frenulum... i've learned something new! that dancing video made me laugh, so cute. wish you guys could've been here last weekend, too!!
Don't worry too much. Yesterday Cole basically dived off of the really high bed and landed straight on his head. I was standing right there! These things happen, or at least I'm going to tell myself that they do.
Owen's smile does look different, but it's still cute. The dancing video was cute. I should video more often.
I agree, we moms are way too hard on ourselves. Sorry he got hurt though, it's not fun watching your babies get hurt....
